While most kids are basking in their final days of summer vacation, Alexis, a sophomore from Savannah High School in Anaheim, is spending his time at Cal State Fullerton, prepping for college through Partnership for 21st Century Education (P21), which promotes the teaching of the four Cs: creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication, in every classroom and across all courses.
Throughout this summer, I have had the great opportunity to be Alexis’ mentor, learning about his interests in marine biology and helping animals, as well as attending events with him, including his first baseball game. Having been inspired by various mentors throughout my life, I believe the relationship is reciprocal and I am glad to now pay it forward.
The P21 frameworks have been adopted by the California State Department of Education, making California the 18th P21 state in the nation. By providing mentorship and opportunities for learning to these students, we are working on a fifth C, character, which includes honor, kindness and moral integrity that are vital to the growth of all citizens and I am proud to be a part of it!
